A Black & White Luxury Wedding at Citizens Ballroom
At the end of October, we had the honor of planning a truly unforgettable celebration at Citizens Ballroom, a breathtaking historic venue in the heart of Downtown Frederick, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C. Citizens Ballroom perfectly balances timeless architecture with modern refinement, making it an extraordinary choice for couples seeking a setting that feels both grand and contemporary.
Historic Grandeur Meets Modern Design
Originally built in 1908 as a bank, Citizens Ballroom has been meticulously restored into one of Maryland’s most elegant event spaces. Its bronze doors, soaring coffered ceilings, and marble accents preserve the integrity of the original structure, while subtle modern updates make it ideal for elevated celebrations. Every inch of this venue feels layered with history yet perfectly suited to a refined, design-driven wedding.
Monochrome Elegance: A Modern Vintage Vision
The design direction for this wedding was modern vintage: a fusion of old-world sophistication and sleek, editorial minimalism. A black and white palette set the tone, drawing inspiration from classic film photography and the venue’s own architectural details.
Guests were invited to embrace the monochrome theme by dressing entirely in black and white, creating a striking visual unity that mirrored the marble and metallic tones of the ballroom. Custom ceremony programs and printed dinner menus added tactile depth, while subtle candlelight and mirrored accents tied everything together with quiet luxury.
Disco Details and a Champagne Pour
The evening took a glamorous turn after dinner with a nod to retro style. The couple cut a custom disco-ball wedding cake created by Buttercream Bakery, followed by a champagne tower pour that set the tone for the dance floor. Under soft lighting and sparkling reflections, the celebration felt effortlessly cinematic, equal parts polished and playful.
A Private Last Dance
To end the evening, the couple shared a private last dance in the now-empty ballroom. Guests gathered outside for the sparkler exit, leaving the newlyweds a few quiet moments surrounded by the glow of candlelight and their monochrome décor. It was a romantic, unhurried close to a night that perfectly embodied timeless elegance.
